I still don't know why I resisted for so long. Getting a Costco membership, that is. Maybe it was because of that Seinfeld episode where they were mocking Kramer's purchases. It seemed like I wasted enough food anyway--wouldn't this just be on a larger scale?
But I am now an avid fan. At first I dabbled in the staples like toilet paper and juice but now I'm buying a lot of my groceries there and hardly ever going to Pathmark anymore. I used to hate/dread my Sunday afternoon shopping trips. A sketchy list, forgetting something, all the little plastic bags. Now, I go to Costco once or twice a month and Trader Joe's for some diversity (that article will come soon!). Below are my top picks as well as breakdown of costs per unit. This is relatively in the order it would be in the store (Hackensack) from right to left.
MEATS
Rotisserie Chicken 3lbs. for $4.99
Ground beef (12% fat) $2.69
Beef Loin Top Sirloin 4.30 lbs for 17.16 ($3.99/lb)
Chicken Thighs Gold Kist Farms: 4 thighs per pkg.; 6 pkgs for $11.23 (these are in easily freezable packages. Love that!)
note: for the steak and gr beef when I get home, I take them out of the package, divide up into freezer bags and put in the freezer
DAIRY/DRINKS AISLE
Stonyfield Yogurt 12 containers for $8.89 (that's .74 per container and the expiration date is August. We will definitely use it up before that!)
Kirkland Milk 1 gallon for $2.05
Ginger ale: 24 cans for $6.49 (.27/can--and they charge us $2 at a restaurant!)
Napkins 4 bags of 330 count each $8.89 ($2.25/bag)
FREEZER SECTION
Bourbon chicken nuggets or Perdue chicken nuggets (you know this is a deal!)
Ling Ling's Dumplings $10.19 (everyone I know loves these)
CANNED/DRY GOODS
Kids juice boxes. Honest Kids brand 18 bags for $6.99 (.38/bag)
Kirkland Cranberry Juice 2 bottles for $6.89 ($3.44/bottle--but these are big!)
Classico tomato sauce 3 in pack for $6.29 (that's $2.09 per bottle)
Kraft Macaroni & cheese 15 boxes for $9.79 (.65/box)
Honey 80 oz. $9.59 (.11/oz.)
A1 Sauce 33 oz for $6.49 (.19/oz)
Cheerios
snacks: Lance Variety Pack of sandwich crackers 36 pkgs for $7.69 (.21/pkg) These are great for the road because they are more filling than other snacks (filled w/cheese and peanut butter)
TOILETRIES/KITCHEN ITEMS
Plastic wrap: big box for $11.99 (ours lasted us 5 years!)
Diapers (size 4):
Kirkland 186 count for $39.59 (.21/diaper)
Huggies 200 count for $42.79 (.21/diaper)
Kirkland wipes: 704 wipes for $15.49 (88 wipes per pkg; 8 pkgs @ $1.93/pkg)
Contact Solution 2 for $7.69 ($3.84/bottle)
Paper towels & Toilet Paper (To come!)
Gallon zip lock bags $9.99 (3 boxes w/39 each; $3.33/box)
I also buy my contacts here: Accuvue Oasys (which is great if you sleep sometimes in your contacts--they're very hydrating) 1pkg for $25.99. You might find cheaper online but after shipping it might even out.
Some new items I bought this time:
Panko crusted Cod fish: about 26 pcs/box for $12.99 (.49/pc)
Meal Mart Falafel Balls: about 33 balls for $5.99 (.18/ball)
**the codfish were delicious and the Falafel balls were a little dry
So, overall, you can compare what you get at your local shopping store or online. I found this new site: www.Alice.com that wants to edge them out in terms of toiletries. But, when I compared the diapers, Alice.com came out $.25/diaper for a Pampers box and it was out of stock. I guess they have some work to do!
I'm so glad I cleaned out my fridge today because now it's well stocked and we can hopefully avoid going out to eat so much in the future.
(leave a tip of when the best/worst time is to shop @ your local Costco and your favorites!)

I used to buy all of my diapers & wipes at Costco. Now that those days are over, we've let our membership lapse. I just don't have that kind of room in my fridge & I can't use up all of those giant packages of food! :)

For a family throwing a large party, Costco is the place to go to purchase bulk items such as plastic utensils, paper plates, foiled party trays, etc.
TOP ITEM: Try the pre-package salads, especially the Parmesian (comes with cranberry, feta cheese, walnuts and white balsamic vinegarette dressing). Cost is about $3.79 per pack and can feed about 4 people. Tastes really good.
