For me, summer is a great time to relax the rigid schedules during the year. We can wake up late and decide that day what we want to do. So, I thought I would compile a list for myself of places that we can go "on a whim" that aren't too expensive and yet kills a few hours. Some of these I haven't checked out yet but have heard about through friends. Please add your suggestions, too, on the comments section or on my Facebook page. I'll have a Part II and include your suggestions!
1. Chuck E. Cheese in North Bergen. 8101 Tonnelle Avenue. If the weather gets too hot this is a great indoor option. The location in Paramus has closed (not sure why), but the North Bergen location is so much less crowded and crazy. I just went today and it was almost empty. I think because it's located underground people don't know about it. I heard during the weekend it gets very crowded, though. The games are perfect entertainment for my 3yo and 20 tokens cost only $5. You can even bring your own food and just use the play area--supposedly they don't care.
2. Bounce U Summer Passport. 70 Eisenhower Drive, Paramus. They have open bounce times usually at 10am to 11:30 or 4:10 to 5:25. It depends, though if they have a party so it's best to check out their event calendar, there you can also reserve your spot. Their summer passport program is something you can sign up in person and is good for a month from that date. For only $30 for the whole family (great for us with 3+ kids) you get unlimited access to open bounce times for a month (or $60 for two months).
3. Ikea. Paramus. While you are in the Paramus area, you can do some shopping while the kids enjoy Smalland. They have to be 36-54" tall and only stay for about an hour. Kids must be potty trained--no pullups allowed.
4. Cutie Patooties. Englewood. You have one more day to take advantage of this North Jersey Groupon offer:
- For $15, you get two open-play admissions (a $30 value in the summer, a $40 value in the fall). Open-play times are Monday–Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- For $97, you get a summer membership valid until August 31, 2011 (a $195 value).

5. Swimming. If you have a hankering for some water fun, there are plenty of low cost options! I've heard great things about the sprayground and pool at Firefighter's Memorial Park in Union City. Mommy Poppins NJ covered the spraygrounds in Hudson County here. She made a note that they are restricting it to Union City residents now so will have to do more research on that to see if it's available to us.
There is also a playground in Cliffside Park behind the School #6 on 440 Oakdene Ave. There is a one foot deep pool that's perfect for my kids. In the morning there is a town rec program but after 12pm it's open to anyone. The only thing I dislike about this park is limited parking on the street and ants.
The Palisades Park town pool (275 Broad Avenue) allows out of town residents to pay a day rate. I believe it was $10 during the week and $15 on weekends last year. There is a nice large kiddie pool about one foot deep and two larger adult swimming pools.
Or, travel south for one hour to Dorbrook Park. I reviewed it last year and it's a great sprayground to take the kids to (or, better yet, go after you visit Long Branch beach in the morning and get them sand-free before you return home!) Link here.
6. Bowling. AMF Wallington Lanes. 299 Paterson Avenue, Wallington. Register your children online and get 2 free games per child per day all summer long! Technically, you can go every day :) Register online, here.
